PERUCHO ORGANIC AGRICULTURE EXPERIENCE

Internship Program

We need interns to help farmers in the implementation of the necessary organic practices at their farms, such as: compost, seedlings, wind breakers, pruning, ecological pest management, erosion prevention, etc., according to the recommendations of the technicians and the needs of the farmers. We also need volunteers to teach Environmental Education, English, and Computer Science for primary school students in the village, which depends on thier qualifications and experience.

Interns may participate in the following activities:

- Seedlings, pruning, weeding, transplanting.

- Taking care of small animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, hens, and goats.

- Household solid waste management, including composting, worm farming and some recycling.

- Ecological pest and weed management, water and soil management, soil fertility, crop rotations, wind breakers, harvest and post-harvest tasks.

- Teaching English and Computer Science in Primary School, only if they have a long-term commitment (9 months).

- Fair trade (farmers' market once a month)http://www.elcomercio.com/agromar/Hortalizas-mariscos-granos-Carolina_0_245375486.html.

Volunteers will receive instructions in topics related to the work performed at the didactic farm or with the local farmers, including agroecology, ecological pest management, organic material management and other practices.

Students from schools nearby and from the capital sometimes visit us. You might have the chance to help in environmental education activities for children and youth. Periodically, the local midwifes have gatherings with workshops and participatory learning activities. You may participate in the farmer’s market on Saturdays, or visit Quito for the weekend. There are several one-day or two-days hiking options.

We have trained several families to host interns and sometimes we accommodate interns in family houses.
